hold that thought

this space for rent. (along with another 30+ just like it)
the historic tonight show appearance happens this evening. i remember when nixon did laugh-in. now he's a main character in a decidedly dark movie about superheroes. for lack of anything really to slog about, i went back to the president. okay, not officially the president, but a response to his march 10 speech on education.
I wonder what we'll learn tonight. "look, up on the air!"

thoughts on obama's thoughts (forgive the quick commercial which may or may not be trying to sell you guns)

  1. high cost providers of mediocre outcomes. . .ouch!! why do we tolerate this kind of performance?

surely not all educators are poor teachers. so why is it that we trail soooo far behind many other "civilized" and/or "industrialized" countries at the moment??

are we afraid of changing the status quo? do we not care? are bombs more important than education? or health care? or safe, adequate housing? if our children had stronger and more adaptable educational skills, would we be able to address those last few issues with more grace and efficiency??

so what did we learn on thurs. pm?? i did not watch the appearance or see a clip of it yet, but it sounds like he's one of us mortal beings, privileged to have an occasional attack of footinmouth disease!

  2. all right. you've put me in a response please position. so here goes...
first, by "younger" teachers, i'm sure mr whitehurst meant to say "newer" teachers. we've begun to address the age issue at my job; no less than 4 people (colleagues) asking coded age computation questions of me this week without directly asking how old i am. but it is, no doubt, a ponderance of our peers in line with those other unmentionables: gender, race and, as you reference (thank you mrpresident for being mortal), (dis)ability level.

for sloggers requiring assistance, these links might help:

    sheer ponderance

second, because you're such a thoughtful slogger, consider the new post @ the bogs, "web search." i'm going to try to load the bogs with potential and/or actual lessons as well as i can. perhaps you'll jump into the swamp too.

  3. i never even heard the "younger" teachers line (had to go back and listen again). but now that you've brought up the whole idea of "younger" vs "newer" teachers--i think that it is still a fairly novel idea that an increasing number of newer teachers are more "mature" in the age dept. and have chosen teaching as a second (or third) career.

your experience on the job might be evidence of the common perception that all newer teachers are indeed younger. or perhaps your co-workers are just genuinely interested in learning more about you and age is one more piece of information???

i had already checked out the new post @ the bogs and was wondering if it was posted for students you're working with or for practice or ??? i was very intrigued. it whet my curiosity. it got me thinking and wondering. but i wasn't sure if it was meant to be open to all. what a great way to review or assess or just see what students are thinking about the "stuff" covered during the school day!
