moby dick by jackson pollock. pollock's name came up today in class. "give me your thoughts, right this second!" my thoughts weren't very informed. how informed do i want to be? how important is it, really?

english teacher made the kids memorize this poem and then recite it a week or so later. they were surprisingly (to me) into it, but why shouldn't they have been. what surprised me was the excitability they showed, especially the boys, practicing in other classes as the readings got closer. poetry is a great device for teaching reading- rhythm, rhyme, repetition, and phrasing. comprehension is a whole other lesson.
