tony wagner's seven skills

1. problem-solving and critical thinking;
2. collaboration across networks and leading by influence;
3. agility and adaptability;
4. initiative and entrepreneurship;
5. effective written and oral communication;
6. accessing and analyzing information; and
7. curiosity and imagination.

according to mr wagner, the seven skills 21st century students need to learn. there are really more like 12 skills here. someday i hope to understand how to teach any of them.

  1. i also hope to be able to understand and teach any combination of these skills.

    sometimes (as i wade through the volumes of new material and ideas, as well as, attempt to keep up with the rest of life and work) it seems that i will never quite own all the skills and tools that i will need as a teacher. how can i possibly expect to teach others these skills if i don’t have them in my own toolbox? and then suddenly, i’ll have a moment of incredible crystal clear understanding . . . things seem within my understanding and ability. then i read something else, or watch a seasoned teacher link pieces of a lesson together seemingly w/o effort and suddenly i am back in the muddy, thick swamp of learning.

    guess i’m just going to have to have faith that i will be able to sort through, digest, understand and synthesize enough stuff (skills) that i will be able to help students find their way into the skills they will need for their futures.

    i'll have to think a bit more about what i am doing to learn these 7 (or 12ish) for myself.
